South Africa:Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2011

The Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) is devoted to the study of China in Sub-Saharan Africa. As Africa’s political economic interaction with China increases, the need for greater analysis of underlying economic dynamics in China and of the Chinese trade and investment in Africa grows. Chinese policies and activities in Africa require a methodologically sound empirical research in African states, a clear understanding of inner-Chinese dynamics, and a comparative perspective to other role-players’ engagement. The CCS covers these three areas of research.

We are seeking to strengthen our team with a postdoctoral research fellow with expertise in Chinese economic relations with Africa, particularly in the areas of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) or trade policies. The research aims at identifying drivers in Chinese economic engagement in specific African economies and sectors, and will particularly look into the distribution of gains in interactions between Chinese and African role-players.

Requirements

A PhD in Economics or related Social Science discipline (such as Political Science, International Relations or Development Studies) obtained in the past five years, and with a clear focus on China and/or Chinese economic activities in Africa. Working knowledge of Mandarin will be a particularly strong asset for the position. The position is likely to involve empirical research in African countries; the willingness and ability to travel are therefore assumed.
Fellowship Application Deadline: 31December2010

Spain: Post-doctoral Position in Cognitive Neuroscience, the Pompeu Fabra University

Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral research position in the SPEECH ACQUISITION AND PERCEPTION GROUP (http://www.sap.upf.edu) at the Brain and Cognition Unit of the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) (http://ucc.upf.edu). The post is part of the BRAINGLOT project, a Research Network on Bilingualism and Cognitive Neuroscience (Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Scheme, Spanish Ministry of Science and Education) (http://brainglot.upf.edu/)

Project
The project brings together the efforts of several research groups spanning different scientific disciplines with the common purpose of addressing the phenomenon of bilingualism from an open and multidisciplinary perspective. The SAP group research goals are focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms supporting efficient speech perception both in native and non-native languages. The project includes behavioral and neuroimaging (fMRI, ERP) approaches.

Job description
We seek a person who leads the electrophysiological aspects of the project, including the development of independent scientific studies, as well as the participation (i.e., supervision) in others. Involvement in some organizational and management aspects is also expected.

Candidate requirements
Candidates should hold a PhD in the behavioural or cognitive neurosciences by the time of the application (although candidates from other research backgrounds will also be considered if their skills are relevant to the project). A record of published research, previous experience with ERP/EEG recording and analysis and good programming skills are essential.

* Applicants from outside the EU are welcome to apply but must qualify for a valid visa.

Conditions
- Duration: The position is initially funded for two years
- Starting date: As soon as possible
- Salary: Commensurate with experience.

How to apply
Applications should include:

- a C.V. including a list of publications
- two letters of recommendation
- a cover letter describing research interests

For informal enquiries about the position and applications, please contact Nuria Sebastian-Galles: nuria.sebastian[ at ]upf.edu. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Please, mention that you are applying to the POSTDOCTORAL position in the email subject

France:Postdoctoral Fellowships Position in Digital Signal Processing for High Efficiency RF Transmitter

Transmitter for SDR BTS must be able to handle multicarrier or simultaneous transmission of different standards, thus they require being wideband (either agile or switchable) and having high transmit power to fulfil stringent constraints regarding both transmission power and bandwidth. Various architecture have to be revisited ranging from Cartesian (Doherty solutions, envelope tracking), LINC, or polar architecture Envelope Elimination and Restoration. Key points about the added value of including signal processing in the transmit path will be to consider: predistortion correction, crest reduction factor, non linear modelisation of PA, High level modelisation of analog parts and Bandwidth of processing.

Description:

This position will last 20 months from October 2010 and will be funded. It will be held in the framework of the FP7-PEOPLE-2008-IAPP Par4CR project (Partnership for the Development of Cognitive Radio).

USA:President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships, faculty mentoring, and eligibility for a hiring incentive to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California.

These contributions may include public service addressing the needs of our increasingly diverse society, efforts to advance equitable access to higher education for women and minorities, or research focusing on undeserved populations or understanding issues of racial or gender inequalities. The program is seeking applicants with the potential to bring to their academic careers the critical perspective that comes from their non-traditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.

The goal of the program is to provide research opportunity and career development for scholars whose work will enhance the diversity of the academic community at the University of California. Of the President’s Postdoctoral Fellows appointed since 2001, approximately 75% are currently in tenure track faculty appointments and over 40% have received faculty appointments at University of California campuses.
